ABOUT
Jörg Langhans became a painter in an urgency of expressionism. When faced with the threat of being redundant and in a “hemorrhage” of revolt, he turned to a slower, more intimate approach to painting. After a series of self-portraits in 1993, he arrived at a fragmented view of the face in which the eye and the mouth became essential elements. These have remained recurrent configurations in his work. The statement is clear: “From that moment on, for me, the picture became the symbolic space of a dreamed coherence.” His painting becomes more metaphysical, the theme of vanity appears more obviously and everything seems revitalized by growing, organic elements, symbols of the universal cycle.
Then followed the series Dermis Dom and Refuges, Figures de renouveau, Voyageurs immobiles, Mains pour voir, Ecorces and Portraits wherein « the form in its fullness stretches endlessly toward formlessness. »* For 25 years, the themes that mark his itinerary not only testify to torn-apart man but also to his wonderment at his surroundings. Peter Sloterdijk says: “We must be torn apart by something beyond ourselves in order to think.” Looking at Jörg Langhans’ work we understand that the same is true for painting.
